Aurélien Villette’s riveting photographs of ruined buildings across Europe are captured in a new book Moldings, ironwork, and other decorative touches shine through in Villette’s images. Villette chose to leave out the names and locations of the buildings he photographed for Spirit of Place (TeNeues, $75) preferring to let readers draw their own conclusions about each space. Crumbling walls reveal intricate craftwork and design. Enormous windows offer a glimpse of nature in full encroach. Villette’s masterful use of light lends warmth to abandoned spaces. Some buildings are easily recognizable, others like this one, can appear to be abstract sculpture.
