The country of Portugal defined its borders in 12th century, making it one of the oldest nations in Europe. In fact, its capital city of Lisbon is thought to be older than Rome by about four centuries. With nearly 900 years of history, it’s no wonder, then, that Portugal is home to a number of remarkable castles established for the purpose of securing and expanding its territory. Though many of these structural relics have fallen into disrepair, many are still standing today and reflect a number of international architectural styles and significant chapters in the nation’s history. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lisbon’s Belém Tower was erected on the banks of the Tagus between 1514 and 1520. The tower merges two distinctive architectural styles: the medieval (seen in the keep tower) and the gothic (represented by the arches in the bulwark).

While many castles were constructed along rivers to fortify borders, the Castle of Almourol was actually built on the Tagus River. It’s set atop a tiny island—just about 250 feet wide—and was originally a Lusitanian fortress before being rebuilt and enhanced in the early 12th century under the rule of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques.
