After 18 months of deliberation, the Frick Collection in New York has named AD100 firm Selldorf Architects as the lead for the institution's expansion, which will see the addition of classrooms for its education department and an upgrade to its conservation and research facilities, among other projects. Helmed by Annabelle Selldorf, the firm will create a design to fit within the institution's existing footprint, which includes the historic Henry Clay Frick mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side, preserving the beautiful beaux-arts architecture. “Annabelle Selldorf is a visionary who creates elegant designs that seamlessly integrate the historic with the modern,” Frick director Ian Wardropper said in a statement. “The firm understands and appreciates the value of institutional mission and has clearly demonstrated in past projects—such as New York’s Neue Galerie and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown—how new designs can enrich, rather than overwhelm, already distinguished architectural spaces." The Frick Collection and Selldorf Architects are expected to reveal their initial plans next winter. frick.org
