If you're taking a train from Grand Central anytime soon, you may want to allow yourself some extra time. Today the commuter’s favorite place for a stiff drink reopened, newly restored by AD 100 interiors firm Ingrao Inc. in collaboration with Geber Group. The 1923 Campbell Apartment, tucked away in the southwest corner of Grand Central station, was given a careful restoration and contemporary reinvigoration as The Campbell. The complex comprises three spaces: the historic Campbell Bar, with a mezzanine decked out in custom leather and mohair furnishings with brass sconces; the indoor Campbell Palm Court overlooking the landmarked main terminal; and the Campbell Terrace, with outdoor seating and its own full bar.
Originally the private office and reception hall of financier and railroad executive John William Campbell, the space features a 13th-century-Florentine–inspired ceiling, a stone fireplace, and a century-old glass window with original millwork. The new design stays true to its historic origins while offering plenty of space for modern-day commuters to enjoy their iconic surroundings.
"As soon as you enter The Campbell, the sense of history is palpable,” said Randy Kemper of Ingrao, Inc. in a statement. “We focused on restoring the space’s original features while utilizing traditional materials and design features whenever possible.” Having a drink next to Mr. Campbell’s personal steel safe is just an extra touch. Let the Jazz Age party begin.
